former military orphanage in Potsdam

Former military orphanage

egyptian obelisk at Breite Strasse

The former military orphanage is one of the most characteristic buildings of the city. Already from far away you can see the deity Caritas on top of the small temple on the roof. It symbolizes the mercy that once distinguished this place.

It was build for children of fallen, impoverished or disabled soldiers of the Prussian army. From 1720 until World War II the foundation cared for the education and schooling of up to 2000 boys and girls at the same time.

Today the former orphanage houses some departments of the Brandenburg government and the successor of the original foundatio, that offers apprenticeships in social professions.

Highlight: You shouldn´t miss the awesome view inside the building from the ground floor right into the dome of the temple! (open Monday to Friday until 5 pm)

The presentation below shows some close-ups of Monopteros, I was able to do in June 2009. You´ll find more information about it here in my blog.
